Weekly Upgrade #15 -Know Yourself, Challenge Yourself

Reading, Writing, Learning, Teaching, Coaching, Living. These are all parts of a daily, weekly, monthly, annual process for growth. It is amazing how much information changes situations. I have dedicated my habitual life to learning many new things and developing into a version of my ideal self. If interested in learning with me, continue to check in and I would love to encourage discussion or questions on the subject of information shared!

Book I’ve Finished: Livewired by David Eagleman

This book was gifted to me from a co-worker/friend. I was able to read quicker as I did not take notes on it. However it was longer than most other books I have been reading. There are several mind blowing scientific bits of information in this book, which only fueled my interest in better understanding the brain and how it functions not only in a psychological manner but sensory and physical manner as well.

The book also leads into the concepts as if one region of your brain is somehow negatively affected, other regions of your brain can rebuild connections. Thus, allowing activities to be performed which previously were believed to be incapable of accomplishing. Then on the other end of the spectrum, if for example a limb is lost, the science is there now to build a prosthetic limb with connections to your brain. Thus allowing your brain to control the prosthetic as if it were your original limb (with some modifications of course). However something like this does not come without a hefty cost financially.

My challenge I am taking on today:

Riding my Peloton for 100 miles. After prepping with snacks, a restroom near by, padded biking shorts, the peloton screen, and using my phone for livestream which can be found in the link below if interested (I plan to ride US Eastern Time from 7:00am-2:00PM)

I continue to seek challenges physically and mentally. One of the many quotes that run through my mind come from David Goggins. This one here I think to apply to myself often: “Nobody cares what you did yesterday. What have you done today to better yourself?” Although his approach is aggressive, there is an approach that differs for everyone. The blunt, aggressive, in your face approach can work for me in a physical setting but it actually has never been my approach when training clients.

Event I enjoyed:

Pablo Picasso Unfinished Art

This past Friday I attended the final class of Probility Leadership Academy. This course digs deep into self reflection and learning to understand the world around you from a different perspective. One of the frequent themes was actually a quote that crossed my path last week in another setting: “You are both a work of art and a work in progress”. I found it to be interesting but I did not think too much about it the first time I came across it.

You are a work of art: Who you are now is who you will have become due to life circumstances and that is not only what makes you unique but allowed you to accomplish the successes you have had thus far in your life. However you are also a work in progress, meaning you can continue to shape your future and shape your eulogy of how you will be remembered. Our future self is not defined by who we were in the past, nor who we were when we woke up this morning. As our brain and our body is constantly changing we can choose what direction we want to develop the personalized beautiful art that was given to us through life. Like art, everyone has their own style and likings.

This course fueled the direction I am going into in my life and supplemented the current developmental material that I have been reading and applying to myself. We were asked to reflect on the best parts of our past, instantly two things came to mind. Although I would say I have been quite fortunate for my past:

1.) Running Ultra-marathons with my brother Jerry. If he never asked me to run our first marathon and never paid for it, I may have never gotten where I am today. This is because of the self-esteem that was developed through the ability to accomplish such an event like running 100 miles within a 24 hour period.

2.) Meeting my wife Kathleen and being pushed to become a better version of myself. Although I learned to believe in myself on a physical level, it actually took meeting her to learn to believe in myself on an educational level. Since then I have not only seen “president’s list” in college and attained two degrees but also continue to develop myself beyond what theoretical information you would learn from a collegial setting.

Change being made:

I will be moving from working in Plymouth, MI back to Canton, MI with a totally different roll in work. Although I am happy to accommodate and accept change in my life. I am going to have the opportunity to work with some amazing individuals whom may have the ability and intent to push me to only challenge myself more. This I am okay with because I thrive on the idea of becoming the best version of myself possible between now and my final day.

Questions and Actions:

The hardest part of doing a lot of activities throughout our life is the self limiting beliefs that we are incapable, or unworthy. This simply is not true and when you can remind yourself that you should stop lying to yourself about limiting beliefs, there can be an exciting future to be seen.

Question:

1.)What are the best parts of your past? What are some of your greatest accomplishments? (Never forget these wins in your life!)

2.) What lies do you hold in your backpack that keep you from living your best life? (Your mind might fight you on this one)

Action:

1.) Write them down to reflect on more as to how they allows you to develop towards the best version of yourself.

2.) Acknowledge the LIES that you learned form your past and replace them with affirmations. (I am enough, I am capable, I am smart, I am beautiful, I am strong, I can do this) Write these down and/or say them to your self daily as eventually you will begin to believe the truth about yourself.
