“Describe a risk you took that you do not regret.”
I took a risk when I decided to go to college five times between high school and me writing this. I learned with each and every experience, things I did and did not like. Without those experience I would not have found my place in Physical Therapy and perhaps questionable progress as a Personal Fitness Trainer.
I took a risk when I decided to run my first marathon and the countless to follow. When I registered to run (9) fifty miler foot races and (2) 100 mile foot races. I took a risk when a friend Bruce and I decided to ride independently 200 miles in one day, I also took a risk not bringing a jacket that day. A mistake I learned from and now own a “Zukies Tavern” long sleeve shirt as memorabilia that kept me “warm enough” later in the ride. When I decided to step on stage at 4% body fat to compete in a men’s physique competition only to take 1st place, after growing up self conscious, over weight, insecure, and hid myself as much as possible.
I took a risk when I decided to travel for work putting myself in front of nearly 200 very intelligent peers only to come out learning 10x as much as I would have if I had not other wise (I honestly think 10x is an understatement). Now with the ability to confidently teach in my field of study as well as better understand my own self.
I take a risk every single day, waking up between 4-5 AM knowing that eventually the consistent effort of personal progress will continue to amount to being the best version of myself. At the sacrifice of perhaps temporary comfort to build a better future for not only myself, but my family; wife and dog included. I gain the opportunity to help build a better future for the community of those around me, a community of individuals I have yet to meet but will potentially impact over the next several decades assuming I’m around to continue making an impact on others.
The only regret was that I had not started taking more risks sooner.
Stepping out of our comfort zone allows us to experience new things in life. It gives us perspective of what we like and what we do not like. The lack of willingness to take risk can result in mediocrity at best. We never risk learning anything new, making an impact on our community or even another individual (something we all have the power do to on a daily basis).
Taking risks leads to personal growth, increased confidence, and expands opportunities. This is what drives both innovation and progress throughout our history.
We can learn resilience, learning to overcome adversity, better equip ourselves when (not if) challenges do arise in life.
While taking risks can be daunting, it is important to remember that not taking risks can also have negative consequences. Sticking with what is familiar and comfortable can lead to stagnation and missed opportunities. By taking risks, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and experiences, which can lead to a more fulfilling and rewarding life
