Forget Fear and Embrace the Deadlift: It’s More Than Just a Gym Exercise!

We often hear warnings about certain exercises, like the deadlift, being dangerous. But here’s the surprising truth: you probably “deadlift” every day!

Think about it – bending to pick up laundry, your kid, the rogue cucumber on the floor, or pulling weeds in the garden. These everyday motions use similar hip-hingeing patterns as a gym deadlift.

Even with back pain, injuries, or surgeries (considerable to healing post surgical protocols), deadlifts can often be safe and beneficial. Many people avoid them simply out of fear, forgetting that it’s not the movement itself that’s bad, but a lack of proper training and variation.

The good news? Your body is incredibly adaptable. With time and dedicated effort, you can retrain your movements, especially the hip hinge. This can help desensitize your nervous system and make it easier to handle everyday activities that involve lifting or bending.

Sure, you don’t need to deadlift hundreds of pounds. But being able to comfortably pick up your shoe or a corn hole bag is a crucial part of staying independent and enjoying life to the fullest.

So, ditch the fear and embrace the deadlift (or its close everyday cousins)! It’s a valuable tool for building strength and maintaining a healthy, active life.
