Sharpen Your Mindset, Shape Your Life

By Dylan J. England | Health, Fitness & Leadership Coach

For those who don’t know me, I’m a health, fitness, and leadership coach, a physical therapy clinician, son, brother, husband—and most importantly, a father.

Let me ask you:
Have you ever tried shaving with a dull razor? It’s frustrating, isn’t it? The blade, once sharp and effective, gets clogged with buildup, making each stroke harder, less effective, and sometimes even painful.

That got me thinking—how often do we let our own mental “blades” dull?

Just like a razor, our minds get weighed down by negative patterns, limiting beliefs, and mental clutter. Over time, these dull edges hold us back from real growth—whether it’s in our health, fitness, leadership, or personal life.

I know this because I’ve been there. Growing up, I was overweight, shy, lazy, and lacked confidence. I believed success was for other people—that they had something I didn’t. I blamed my circumstances. But here’s the hard truth: I wasn’t taking responsibility for my own growth.

Change didn’t happen overnight. It took years of failures, self-reflection, and hard work to realize that real transformation isn’t about flipping a switch—it’s about consistently sharpening your mindset.

I had to challenge my old beliefs, step out of my comfort zone, and invest in myself. I went back to college for the fourth time, started reading personal development books, journaling, and learning from mentors and coaching programs.

I discovered that physical effort alone isn’t enough—your mindset is the key to lasting success.

Today, I’ve accomplished far more than I ever thought possible. But I’m not done. Every day, I ask myself:

What habits or beliefs are dulling my edge?
What needs to be replaced with something better?

So, here’s my challenge to you:

  • Take Inventory – What negative patterns or limiting beliefs are holding you back?
  • Replace the Worn-Out – What new habits, routines, or perspectives could help you grow?
  • Sharpen Your Blade – Set aside 10 minutes a day for reflection, journaling, or learning.

Your growth isn’t an accident—it’s a choice you make daily.
