In the United States nearly 6% of the population suffer from depression.
Note that there is a very good place for medication and they can help, but the conversation stops there in terms of management for depression. There are no “reps” selling physicians on a daily basis buying them lunch to help sell their product for holistic health and fitness services. If personal health optimization is not of personal interest, the requirement for professional level education is very minimal if at all.
In addition our health care management currently is a lag response, meaning we wait until there’s an issue or complication that had progressed beyond simple management and prevention strategies, whether that be psychosocial or physiological. This is where specialists like Peter Attia discuss medicine 2.0 ( our current model) vs medicine 3.0 (a preventive health care model). There’s a great book called “Outlive” written by him albeit it deep in information, it’s a great book to learn about health and quality of life. Generally most of us are waiting until our illness becomes so overwhelming that we cannot see or do anything but live victim to our pathology. This does not have to be a way of life, as we all have ownership of our lives and how we respond to the challenges that we inevitably come across.
Creating a winning mindset to overcome the elephant in our way:
Let’s start a story with Charlotte who found herself constantly hindered by a metaphorical elephant that seemed to follow her everywhere she went.
This elephant wasn’t a physical creature, but rather an immense obstacle that manifested in various aspects of Charlotte’s life. It represented her fears, doubts, and insecurities, looming large and casting a shadow over her aspirations. At times, the elephant appeared as self-doubt, whispering words of discouragement in Charlotte’s ear whenever she pursued life aspirations. Other times, it took the form of external challenges and setbacks, seemingly insurmountable obstacles that stood between Charlotte and her goals. Despite the elephant’s presence, Charlotte refused to be deterred. With unwavering determination and resilience, she confronted the elephant head-on, refusing to let it trample her hopes and aspirations.
Charlotte was able to overcome her internal dialogue with:
- Positive Affirmations: Practice repeating positive affirmations to counteract self-doubt and negative thoughts. By affirming worth, abilities, and potential, and can gradually build confidence and resilience.
- Visualization: Visualizing herself successfully navigating past the elephant, achieving goals, and overcoming obstacles. Visualizing success can help reinforce belief in ourselves and our ability to overcome challenges.
- Mindfulness and Meditation: Engaging in mindfulness practices and meditation can help Maya cultivate inner peace, clarity, and resilience. By learning to observe her thoughts and emotions without judgment, developing a greater sense of self-awareness and emotional regulation.
- Goal Setting: Breaking down goals into smaller, manageable tasks and create a plan to tackle them one step at a time. Setting specific, achievable goals can provide direction and motivation, making it easier to navigate around the elephant.
- Seeking Support: Reaching out to the appropriate friends, family, or a therapist for support and encouragement. Having a strong support system can provide valuable perspective, guidance, and reassurance during challenging times.
- Challenging Negative Beliefs: Challenge and reframe negative beliefs or assumptions that contribute to her feelings of self-doubt or inadequacy. By questioning the validity of these beliefs and replacing them with more empowering thoughts, we can shift out mindset and approach obstacles with greater optimism and resilience.
- Embracing Failure as Learning: Adopting a growth mindset and view failure as an opportunity for growth and learning rather than a reflection of worth or abilities. By reframing setbacks as valuable lessons and experiences, she can approach challenges with greater courage and resilience.
- Celebrating Progress: Celebrating successes, no matter how small, to acknowledge efforts and reinforce positive behaviors. Celebrating progress can boost confidence and motivation, fueling determination to continue overcoming the elephant and achieving goals.
By implementing these mental strategies, Charlotte can gradually diminish the power of the metaphorical elephant and navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence, resilience, and optimism.
This gives room to focus on progressive healthy habits that only continue to stack small wins and fill in the gaps of where we are and where we want to be.
Creating a winning body to overcome the elephant in our way:
Charlotte had struggled with feelings of sadness and despair, often finding it difficult to muster the energy to get through each day. Despite the smiles she wore on the outside, inside, she battled with a relentless foe: depression.
Charlotte stumbled upon an article that caught her eye. It highlighted the profound benefits of exercise in combating depression. Intrigued by the promising findings, Charlotte felt a moment of hope. She decided to embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation through exercise. She started small, with short walks around her neighborhood, feeling the warmth of the sun on her face and the gentle breeze against her skin. As days turned into weeks and weeks into months, Charlotte gradually increased the intensity and duration of her workouts. She discovered the joy of running through parks, hiking trail ways, cycling trail-ways , and found peace through practicing yoga in the solitude of her bedroom. With each stride, pedal, and stretch, Charlotte felt the weight of depression begin to lift from her shoulders. She found solace in the rhythm of her breath and the beat of her heart, embracing the cathartic release that exercise provided.
Over time, Charlotte noticed subtle shifts in her mood and outlook on life. The once overwhelming waves of sadness began to recede, replaced by moments of clarity, optimism, and joy. She found herself smiling more often, laughing more freely, and embracing the beauty of each passing day with newfound gratitude.
Through the transformative power of exercise, Charlotte had discovered a newfound sense of strength, resilience, and inner peace. She realized that while depression may always be a part of her story, it no longer defined who she was or dictated the course of her life. As she continued on her journey of self-healing and growth, she found comfort in knowing that with each step she took, she was moving forward, one stride closer to a brighter, happier, and healthier version of her best self. And with each beat of her heart, she knew that she was not alone, for she had found her greatest ally in the healing power of exercise and movement.
Although the story of Charlotte was intended to be inspirational and relatable, her story possibly lives in all of us. This is so much so that her story is based on research concluding of 14,170 participants whom combatted depression through movement.
According to the British medical journal research held by: Michael Noetel, Taren Sanders, Daniel Gallardo-Gómez, et.al. “Exercise is an effective treatment for depression, with walking or jogging, yoga, and strength training more effective than other exercises, particularly when intense. Yoga and strength training were well tolerated compared with other treatments. Exercise appeared equally effective for people with and without co-morbidities and with different baseline levels of depression. To mitigate expectancy effects, future studies could aim to blind participants and staff. These forms of exercise could be considered alongside psychotherapy and antidepressants as core treatments for depression.”
