Do you ever feel like you’re capable of more, but you aren’t sure how to get there? Maybe you’ve wondered how to build confidence, grit, endurance, or self-esteem—the qualities that not only make someone great but also unlock success in nearly every area of life.
What if the key wasn’t waiting for the “perfect time,” but instead choosing to take on a challenge that intentionally pushes you past your comfort zone?
That’s the idea behind the ancient Japanese concept of Misogi: a transformative test designed to stretch you beyond what you believe is possible. This isn’t about recklessness. It’s about purposefully engaging in challenges that create “eustress”—the positive stress that reshapes the brain, builds resilience, and transforms how you see yourself.
Why Stress Can Be Healthy (If You Choose It)
Most people think of stress as harmful. And yes, chronic stress can damage the body and mind. But eustress is different. Eustress is the controlled, short-term stress you feel when you step into a challenge. Neuroscience shows that when you face eustress:
-
Your brain literally rewires itself. Exposure to manageable stress increases neuroplasticity. The brain’s ability to form new connections; helping you adapt, learn, and grow stronger.
-
Confidence grows from evidence. Each time you endure discomfort and succeed, your brain encodes a memory of capability, shifting your self-image from “I can’t” to “I can.” Or an affirmation I’ve encourage some of my patients to use: “I can, I will, I must”. Inspired by Eric Thomas.
-
Resilience is forged, not gifted. Psychologists emphasize that resilience is built by facing challenges, recovering, and repeating. Without stress, there is no adaptation.
When you deliberately put yourself in situations that stretch your limits—whether physical, mental, or emotional—you not only survive them, you emerge changed.
Modern Misogis:
Some Misogis I’ve taken on..
- Running a marathon, ultramarathon, triathlon
- Riding a bicycle 100+ miles
- Reading for years: for personal development
- Strength training and competing in a physique competition
- Starting multiple businesses
- and much more…
Here are several examples to inspire you to choose your own adventure:
Physical Misogi Examples
- Run a marathon, ultramarathon, or trail race without knowing if you can finish.
- Swim across a lake or open water you’ve never attempted before.
- Do 20,000-50,000 steps (or a full day’s hike) in one day.
- Carry a heavy object (sandbag, log, kettlebell) for an entire day hike.
- Complete a 10-12-16-24-hour workout challenge (push-ups, pull-ups, cycling, etc.).
- Attempt a mountain summit or long-distance backpacking trip.
- Commit to an extreme endurance event (Spartan, Ironman, or 12-hour ruck march).
Mental Misogi Examples
- Spend 24–48 hours in complete silence with no phone, no distractions, just journaling.
- Read a 1,000+ page book in one week and write a reflection.
- Learn a difficult skill (chess, coding, or piano piece) in a set timeframe.
- Write and plan a vision, your goals, and actionable steps

- Go through a week of “no complaints” and record the impact on your thoughts.
Lifestyle Misogi Examples
- Go on a 30-day digital detox (no social media, minimal phone use).
- Wake up at 4:00–5:00 AM every day for 30–60 days.
- Quit sugar, alcohol, or processed food for 90 days.
- Live on a minimalist budget for one month (spending only on essentials).
- Fast for 12 hours safely under proper guidance.
- Send gratitude to 2-3 people daily for 30+ days
-
50/50 shot of failure – It should be big enough that you aren’t sure you can do it.
-
Spillover effect – Even if it has nothing to do with your job or daily life, the confidence and resilience gained carry over into everything else you do.
The point isn’t just discipline. It’s transformation through deliberate daily eustress. These structured commitments create small but powerful stressors that reshape how you see yourself.
Each task seems small, but together they create a rhythm of accountability, self-reflection, and growth.
The Secret Behind Lasting Growth
Here’s the truth: reading, listening, or learning alone changes very little in the long term. Research shows that deliberate practice—structured, intentional effort with feedback and reflection—is what leads to mastery. It’s not about dabbling. It’s about stretching yourself, failing, adjusting, and persisting until growth becomes inevitable.
That’s why challenges like a Misogi work: they force you into deliberate practice. They demand effort, attention, and persistence—all while reshaping your future self.
Why You Can’t Wait
There will be days when you won’t feel like it. Your mind will whisper excuses—“you’re too tired, too busy, too stressed.” That’s the moment growth happens. Success is never about doing what’s easy. It’s about choosing purpose over autopilot.
Your Misogi doesn’t have to be extreme. It doesn’t mean running an ultramarathon tomorrow or lifting three times your body weight. It simply means intentionally choosing something that feels just outside your current reach, then committing to it fully.
If willing to take on your first marathon, I’m willing to share my marathon training program designed to complete your first marathon.

Questions to Ask Yourself
- Who is your future self in 3–5 years?
- What hobbies, health, relationships, and financial stability define that person?
- What actions are they taking today that your current self hasn’t embraced yet?
Actions to Take
- Write down 1–3 goals in each category: physical, financial, and social.
- Don’t limit them based on past experience—write from the perspective of your future self.
- Put these goals somewhere visible. Look at them daily.
- Commit to one simple step each day toward each goal, no matter how small.
- Plan your own Misogi
You don’t need to wait for the perfect moment. The perfect moment will never come. Your Misogi—the challenge that will transform you—begins when you decide to step into the discomfort of growth.
See challenges not as obstacles, but as invitations to become the person you know you’re capable of being. Your brain, your resilience, your confidence—they all grow when you dare to choose eustress on purpose.
The question is: what will your Misogi be?
